Default Upgrading laptops

I've been doing a bit of reading around on the net and it sounds like it's not at all possible to upgrade most laptops?

I've had this Sony Vaio for 3 years now and it's getting a bit outdated. The graphics card is so shit I can hardly play any games (certainly nothing new) and could do with more memory. From what I've read I'm just gonna have to make do with this until I can afford a new laptop because they're not upgradable... is this true?

It is indeed true. You will be able to upgrade the Memory and CPU (probably won't go very far with that though, as BIOS updates don't generally come out from laptops and that limits you to CPUs within the speed range you're at).

GPUs can be upgraded, only if they come packaged on MXM cards or such. But this is the very minority, and they aren't exactly easy to buy either. There are many external solutions in the pipelines, but none has really made it to retail yet, so you cannot really upgrade the chip.
